A bed is the main piece of furniture in every US bedroom, but unfortunately for small bedroom owners, isn’t the only one. Among other must-haves there’s a wardrobe and bedside table, to say the least. It would also be great to squeeze in a TV set, an armchair and sometimes even a cabinet.
Here you’ll find tips how to use space in a small bedroom efficiently; how to store all your things there and still be able to walk freely around the room. First of all, you’ll get to know general tricks in dealing with small bedrooms, and after that we’ll resort to organizing your home storage space.
General tricks:
- Pick out an appropriate door to your bedroom. A sliding door, for example, will save you some space.
- A glazed balcony can become the extension of the bedroom.
- Use a windowsill in your space-management. It can house not only your plants, but also boxes with different trifles.
Organizing a wardrobe.
Sometimes even putting a wardrobe is a problem. If you can’t figure out where to place it, jump to the next paragraph. However, if it fits just right, let us show you several tricks how to organize it.
- A built-in wardrobe is the most efficient space-eater if space-eaters can be efficient at all. It takes only the space you can use, leaving no gaps between itself and the walls and ceiling.
- If a built-in variant won’t do, pick a floor-to-ceiling wardrobe.
- Sliding doors made of frosted glass or mirrors will perfectly complete your room design. These surfaces will continue the task of the bedroom visual expansion.
Make the most of your bed.
Of course, if you suffer from a small bedroom, your main objective is to choose the furniture as small as possible. But when your sitting and sleeping furniture turns into a storage room, it’s not a sin to occupy several extra square meters.
That’s where IKEA stores are ready to help people from the USA and the UK to design a compact bedroom. Have you ever thought that your entire wardrobe can be tucked under the mattress? It’s time to imagine a giant bed for two with all your clothing there. First, you get enough space for a comfortable night’s sleep; second, your belongings stop getting in the way.
Another alternative is a folding sofa. This nifty thing can store, for example, your bed linen and winter clothes. But its main feature is in the transformation from a divan to sit on in the daytime to a bed to sleep on at night.
Bedside tables.
Don’t confine yourself to two bedside tables but take advantage of the space above them. It’s a perfect place for wall rails and for shelves where you can store books, boxes and knick-knacks.
And what about adorning your bed with book-stands? Or simply shelf stands, not necessarily for books. You can place them on either side of the bed and above it. This construction will do instead of bedside tables and will house plenty of your stuff.
Store on the walls.
We already mentioned wall rails and shelves above bedside tables, but why can’t your whole walls act as a storage place? Add some hooks, and you already have space for your everyday things.
Hooks and rails can even become substitutes for a wardrobe. In this case you’ll need to take some hangers. The main advantage is that your clothes will be ready at hand and unfolded; the main disadvantage is that they’ll gather dust if you don’t wear them regularly. Thus, tuck out-of-season clothes under the bed and hang all the rest around your room.
Walls will be a great decision for a TV set, too. If your rearrangements left you with no place for a stand, hang the TV on the wall opposite to the headboard. It’ll help you to relax after a tiresome working day and won’t cost you much precious space.
Thus, decorating your home is a laborious process, especially if you’re mulling over every possibility of making the most of a limited amount of square meters. Multi-functional furniture is what you need in the first place. Remember that almost every piece of furniture – a bed, armchair or table – can turn into a storehouse for your things. The second trick is to use all the surfaces you can; don’t leave your walls empty, they’ll do you more good with shelves and cupboards on them.
