Beauty may only be skin deep, but sometimes that might be all you have to work with. Small spaces are a given in most apartment blocks in New York – and the rooms in this 1960s-era apartment were no different.

“The apartment was in its original condition when my clients bought the property,” says Alan Berman, president of a US company Archetype. “We were contracted to carry out a complete remodel, which included updating the guest and master bathrooms.

“The construction comprised 75mm-thick concrete walls with wire mesh and plaster, as is typical of the era. In re-configuring the spaces for a more contemporary lifestyle, we removed one of the walls and were able to appropriate a bit more space for the bathroom.

The replacement wall, of standard drywall construction, also enabled us to incorporate a small niche into the bath area. This creates an integrated storage area that maximizes the available space.

To create a relaxing ambience, a pale green glass tile was chosen as the main accent. Bisazza glass mosaics balance the green with the introduction of some earth tones. Wenge cabinetry is a bold statement and also references similar cabinetry found throughout the apartment.relaxing ambience in a green tile bathroom

“The clients wanted to create a crisp and contemporary feel while maintaining a calm aesthetic. The soaking tub brings relaxation to the fore, while the tiled walls and ceiling create an immersive feel,” says the designers from the USA.

Earth tones also feature in the master bath, with its Emperador Dark marble flooring. Square lines and cantilevered vanities impart a modern touch, but neither scheme seems cold or impersonal.

The simple mix of color and materials imparts a visual warmth that has a nostalgic feel to it. The result is bathrooms that are engaging rather than perfunctory spaces.
